Area Regeneration

Across the UK there has been a renewed interest in strategic planning in a Regional and City Regional context. Public sector agencies are taking a leading role in developing policy frameworks, devleopment plans, spatial strategies and, in some instances, new governance arrangements which will successfully deliver improved economic performance and growth. Whilst the core focus for these activities is around uplifting GVA, there is a strong recognition that people based programmes will play a critical role - including the creation of 'neighbourhoods of choice, addressing worklessness and raising skills and educaitonal standards.

The delivery of a high quality residential offer within our City Regions is a critical component of their long term success and sustainability. Faced with tightening financial constraints, and often a high degree of local opposition to initial redevelopment programmes, the timely delivery of transformational outcomes by Housing Market Pathfinders remains a key priority. Increasingly, local authorities are seeking to align activities by a range of public sector partners - dealing with skills, education, crime and neighbourhood management - recognising the importance of these activities in creating and sustaining neighbourhoods of choice.

Although these activities are being championed by public sector agencies, the key to successful delivery lies in developing new and extended partnerships with the private sector. Particualry in town centre commercial regeneration, but also across housing development, infrastructure provision and neighbourhood management, public sector organisations are seeking to put in place long term strategic partnerships to deliver transformational change.
