Grantham Canal Basin Masterplan
The Brief: Produce the economic case for the redevelopment of the Grantham Canal Basin and subsequent masterplan in order that the enormous potential of the site surrounding the canal basin is realised. The site is seen as fundamental in developing and enhancing Grantham's role as a sub-regional centre for the economic and social benefit of the town's residents.
We are currently working with South Kesteven District Council and partners to prepare the economic case for the redevelopment of the Grantham Canal Basin, and to manage the subsequent spatial masterplan phase. The Grantham Canal links Nottingham and Grantham, though some sections of the canal are now in disuse and dry, whilst others have been lost to development. The area surrounding the canal basin on the approach to the town is occupied by low density and derelict employment land.
The purpose of this study is to produce the economic case for the redevelopment of this canal basin and subsequent masterplan in order that the enormous potential of the site surrounding the canal basin is realised. The site is seen as fundamental in developing and enhancing Grantham's role as a sub-regional centre for the economic and social benefit of the town's residents.
The masteplanning work is ongoing and involves exploring the mix of uses which may be appropriate for the canal basin area, including residential, employment and retail uses as well as analysing the economic viability of the redevelopment. The study will ensure that any redevelopment compliments the town centre regeneration and other planning and economic development priorities within the town. The masterplan process is expected to be completed in early 2007. This piece of work demonstrates our ongoing involvement in preparing and delivering area regeneration strategies and masterplans and providing guidance relating to large scale projects for public sector clients.
