
Understanding the impact of cultural tourism in Cornwall
The Brief: We have been appointed by The Cornwall Arts Partnership to undertake a study to identify the impact of cultural tourism in Cornwall. The aim of the study is to establish robust evidence of the impact of cultural tourists on the ‘triple bottom line’ of the economy, the environment and the community. The outcome from the research are expected to assist the cultural sector inform its advocacy regarding the worth of investment in the cultural economy.
The methodology of the study includes:
- A strategic mapping exercise - to identify ‘cultural events’ being delivered between May and December 2007. From this list a number of key events were selected that would be targeted for primary research.
- Visitor survey – face to face interviews were undertaken at 3 events with self completion questionnaire being distributed and collated at a further 4 events.
- Consultation – face to face and telephone interviews were undertaken with stakeholders, local businesses and Education/Outreach Officers at a number of venues.
- Learning from elsewhere – consultation interviews were undertaken with key representatives from the Highlands and Islands to identify potential lessons for the future and inform the Regions of Culture campaign.
- Reporting – a final report and advocacy document will be produced.
