Area regeneration

ekosgen has extensive experience of working in the area regeneration sector across the UK. Our regeneration offer has expanded over the past five years, and we have a strong regeneration team working across our three UK offices comprising the disciplines of town planning, surveying, geography and economics.

The sector is experiencing changing times with the shift away from large scale, discretionary funded regeneration programmes to local rewards and incentives for regeneration and growth.  The demise of discretionary funded, area based regeneration programmes has moved the focus from public intervention to private led regeneration. Recent policy announcements have also placed great emphasis on the localism agenda and the involvement of local communities in shaping the future development of their neighbourhoods as well as new funding streams such as the Regional Growth Fund and New Homes Bonus.

Under the current economic and public sector funding climate, the delivery of all forms of regeneration is challenging, and increasingly requires new and innovative funding mechanisms, securing private sector investment and using public sector assets more creatively. In accessing public sector funding for regeneration projects, the emphasis is on involving local communities in key decisions, demonstrating the localised impacts which projects will deliver and in providing evidence of the ability to create sustainable private sector employment opportunities.

Our focus on the socio-economic elements of the regeneration process make us well placed to provide advice on funding and delivery strategy.

Over the past decade, we have been involved in commissions that have included the design and evaluation of area based regeneration initiatives such as New Deal for Communities and Single Regeneration Budget; technical advisory roles for Housing Market Renewal Pathfinders and Growth Point Partnerships; and providing the socio-economic inputs to a variety of masterplanning commissions. Our evaluation expertise provides us with an extensive understanding of what works well and less well in the planning and delivery of major regeneration schemes.

Recent assignments include:

  • The development of a neighbourhood planning approach for Aspire Housing; Economic masterplans for Sheffield and the Atlantic Gateway, covering the Manchester and Liverpool City Regions;
  • Regional Growth Fund and Enterprise Zone submissions for a variety of public and private sector applicants;
  • and Economic impact assessments and regeneration statements to support planning applications for major mixed use schemes in towns and cities across the UK.

Key Themes in this area:

  • Economic Masterplans
  • Neighbourhood Planning and Regeneration Frameworks
  • Project and Programme Development, Feasibility and Delivery Strategies
  • Project and Programme Appraisals and Evaluations
  • Socio-Economic Baselines, Economic Impact Assessments and Regeneration Statements
  • Housing Renewal and Growth.
