Evaluation of the Enterprising Britain Competition

What our client wanted

ekosgen was commissioned by Enterprise UK to evaluate the impact of the Enterprising Britain competition. Enterprising Britain was a national competition which ran between 2004 and 2010 in the UK. The competition celebrated local achievements in enterprise by recognizing and rewarding local partnerships driving social and economic transformation. Enterprising Britain appealed to a wide range of participants, from science parks to holistic partnerships in deprived communities. During its lifetime, Enterprising Britain recognised over sixty locations as leaders in enterprise development and six have been awarded the national accolade of ‘most enterprising place’ in the country.

What we did

The evaluation assessed the impact of winning the competition on local partnerships, drawing on interviews with ten strategic partners and twenty six participants.

Our work examined the competition’s progress, achievements and impacts; its future relevance and development; and fit within the broader context of enterprise support. The study considered the future of the competition and suggested potential options that could be pursued. It was particularly timely given that there was a new government in place at the time of commissioning.
