Low Carbon Economics

Motivated in part by legally binding emission reduction targets helping the UK move to a low-carbon economy is a primary Government objective. We have supported many clients to support key industries in a low carbon environment and develop clear policies to grow the green economy. The company has reviewed numerous resource efficiency programmes and advised on the development of low carbon sectors/industries at the local and national level. Developing and evaluating the incentives to stimulate the introduction of low carbon technologies forms a key part of this work.

We have a reputation for evidence based work often drawing on rigorous primary research highlighting both the employment and business benefits of the transition to a low carbon economy.

Our work in this area covers three major strands:

  • Low Carbon and Environmental Good and Services (LCEGS) analysis - looking at the make-up, performance and prospects of low carbon industries, including new and renewable energies and environmental technologies, at local, sub-regional and national level. For instance a national review of the Waste Management and Resource Recovery sector (for BIS) assessed its make up, performance, and prospects as well as policy implications for the Department;

Low carbon implementation plans - advising on the development low carbon industries including:

  • the quantification of carbon reduction emissions and carbon mitigation (and savings) by waste stream;
  • and the promotion and development of environmental technologies.
  • In several longitudinal reviews of resource efficiency we have quantified the economic and environmental impact of business improvement measures;

Low carbon clusters, supply chains and resource efficiency - assessing the employment and carbon impact of interventions to support the sector and inter-linkages between producers and consumers. Clients have asked us to quantify the true economic potential of various low carbon sectors and advised on green infrastructure - including links to housing (energy savings e.g. retro-fit), transport and employment/business space.
